I heard about Jack’s passing this morning and yes there were tears in my eyes. Later tonight I will relate some of my experiences with Jack. The following is an excerpt from the 2007 Maryland alumni magazine.
“As an undergrad, Heise was manager of the basketball team. He is a past president of the M Club; the Terrapin Club; the Maryland Alumni Association and the Maryland Educational Foundation. He also served on the board of the University of Maryland, College Park Foundation.
Heise attends all home and away football and basketball games, and all women’s home basketball games. In addition, he’s often a fixture at on-campus events such as field hockey, lacrosse and volleyball.
And consider this stat: Heise has missed only three ACC basketball tournament games since 1946. “I’m a fervent fan and it’s a major part of our life,” he announces proudly, “That’s why I got the name ‘Mr. Maryland.’”
In 1963-84 Jack sat me down and told me to write the Terp Topics and Tid Bits column and remained my number one buddy and supplier of info every since. Jack was the heart of the column. And now I pray for his soul. God blessed us with Jack Heise.
Prayer changes things, and Prayer changes you.
It’s been said that:
“He who loses money loses much,
he who loses a friend loses more,
but he who loses faith loses all.
Jack Heise was more than met the eye.
“A Man of Good Character
With Ambitious Purposes.
A Congenial Disposition.
Possessed of Good Morals.
Having a High Sense of Honor, and
A Deep Sense of Personal Responsibility.”
Jack was a mentor, fraternity brother and more… experiences that helped me smile when things seemed to be going dead wrong. ADH
