#7 Wrestling Wins 2 Matches But Falls to #2 Iowa State

The No. 7 University of Maryland wrestling team, competing for the first time in school history at the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals, defeated Northern Iowa and Buffalo, while falling to No. 2 Iowa State Saturday in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

The Terps cruised to a victory over host Northern Iowa. That set up a match with powerhouse Iowa State. Maryland kept nearly every match close, but was unable to get over the hump, falling in eight of 10 matches. Four of those losses, however, were decided by three points or less.

Bell recorded the first win for Maryland by taking a 3-2 decision over No. 8 Nick Fanthorpe, giving the Terps a 3-2 lead. Letts got the other win for Maryland by also defeating a ranked wrestler – No. 4 Ryan Burk – 5-3. Taylor came up just short wrestling against defending national champion and No. 1 Jake Varner, falling 5-4 in a match that could have gone either way. Seven of Iowa State’s 10 wrestlers are ranked in the top-11 by Intermat. (from umterps.com)
