The seventh-ranked University of Maryland wrestling team fell 19-14 to Navy in front of 2,825 fans at Halsey Field House in Annaplis, Md., on Friday night. The Terps, ranked seventh in the newly released National Wrestling Coaches Association/USA Today/Coaches Poll and eighth in Intermat’s rankings, were wrestling without several starters (Alex Krom, Steven Bell, and Mike Letts) and were unable to overcome a gritty performance from the Midshipmen. Navy won six of 10 matches, including four of five in the lightweight matches, to come up with the upset victory. The Midshipmen improved to 3-1 on the season while the Terps fell to 13-4. “It’s a frustrating loss,” said head coach Kerry McCoy. “It’s tough to win against a good team with all your starters and even more difficult without some of your starters when you get outfought. You can’t teach fight and belief. Hopefully it’s that wakeup call that we need.”
