Saturday night for some reason I could not sleep–probably the excitement over Maryland’s great performance against State. About 4AM I was watching the replay of the 69 Super Bowl between the Jets and the Colts. To cut to the chase—Johnny U had rallied the Colts from a 16-0 deficit with a TD with 3 minutes left. Tom Mitchell then recovered an onsides kick. The Colts drove but stalled on the Jets 19 yard –4th and 5. For some insane reason Shula though the Colts needed 2 scores did not kick a field goal. The score could have been 16-10 with 2 minutes left and the Colts still has 1 timeout left. Curt Gowdy and his sidekick never said a word. I looked through the archives and could not find any second guessing. I don’t get it. Shula needs to answer why this happened. How is that for a 40 year old 2nd guess!!!!!

The only thing that I can think of is Shula thought having the ball that deep in Jets territory at that time was his best chance to get the touchdown the Colts needed. Never cared for Curt Gowdy.
