Buzzer Beater Lingers in My Head–How Do I Shake It?—My Personal Tribute To #21

I promise that I am not going to linger on this forever. BUT: here’s some new takes on the DAGGER!!!!

Last night after my kids and friends called to make sure I survived the DAGGER. I swore I would never look at the play again.  But that all changed today when waking up after 6 nightmares of the replay , I just had to watch in sloooooooowwwwwwwwwwwww motion the improbability of the defeat.

First of all the insanity of the question–Why didn’t Greivis wait longer to shoot absolutely amazes me. In that situation you take the first decent look you have in any league. A few years ago Gilbert Arenas hit 3 game winners by holding on to the ball for the last split second he could before shooting. It was an amazing run. The next 20 times he tried to do the same thing, he failed.

Okay with everyone running toward the basket on Greivis’ drive, it was clearly helter skelter getting back on defense. Izzo was lucky his half hearted, indecisive  timeout call was missed by the refs because if Gary had a chance to set up a last second defense versus any play Izzo would have called, we would have learned quickly who really is the better coach.

How did the pass miss the head of Delvin Roe. The shooter caught the ball avoided Landon Milbourne , moved from his right to his left and swished a 22 footer.  I wonder if Landon’s foul on Aminu’s 3 pointer  vs Wake lingered in his mind. In any event you don’t want to foul the shooter of such adifficult shot , just bother him like Landon did.

The buzzer beater is so final–I just wanted Greivis to have a split second left to pull another rabbit out of his hat.

The bottom line, the MSU victory improbable as the last 6.6 seconds were—was just meant to be. The Terrapins showed the nation what it means to never quit , never stop believing in yourself, and as long as there is an ounce of energy left in a Gary Williams’ coached body—the fight will go on to the end. I venture to say that very  (and I mean very few) teams in the nation could have staged that sort of comeback. What was great about it was that  Adrian, Cliff, and Sean lead the press. Cliff Tucker made the key steals, Mosley led the traps and scraps, and Bowie nailed the threes that kept us in the game. Never underestimate what Gary can do with 2 Seniors in his lineup and you may as well say 3 because Mosley has the savvy of a Senior.

Finally, the heart and leadership of #21 was on full display in those 2 minutes. What is really incredible is that just like always, Greivis made 4 buckets  any one of which had he missed the game was over over. But the General was undaunted and made all 4. He was ready to take any heat for missing, but in his mind he never thinks of the negative.  Greivis is a winner in everything he does. This kid is a warrior on the court and I assure you his legend will grow as the years go by.  All of Terrapin nation can celebrate the brilliant career of Greivis Vasquez.
