Cornerback Nolan Carroll was still a college kid at Maryland when he watched former Dolphins kick returner Ted Ginn Jr. take those two kickoffs back for touchdowns against the New York Jets last year.Carroll definitely took notice. It was a reminder of the possible impact a special teams player can have on a game. “It was amazing,” said Carroll, now a rookie with the Dolphins. “I think he single-handedly changed the game, just by his X-factor of being able to return those kicks. Special teams is an aspect of the game that can really turn everything around.” The competition is among running backs Tristan Davis and Patrick Cobbs, as well as Carroll. The team already has an idea of Cobbs’ ability because of his body of work. He is consistent and decent in the role — but he isn’t flashy. “They’re both super fast,” Cobbs said. “They both have a different set of skills. Tristan is a running back, so he has a low center of gravity. He can make a lot of people miss. Nolan Carroll is a straight-ahead runner. He’s fast, and he’s downhill as well. from the Miami Herald
