So Long Ernie—Everyone Will Miss You

Ernie Tyler was laid to rest today.  Ernie certainly was a legend with the Orioles. Somewhere about 1983 or so, my season tickets were moved to the first row behind home plate at Memorial Stadium. Those were the days I would go to 50-60 games a year. It was then I met Ernie. What a great guy. He would sit next to the visitors dugout which was about 10 feet from the screen. Every game we would talk about something relevant about Baltimore sports. In the off season I would see Ernie at Loyola basketball games.  But one thing was constant, Ernie’s presence at every O’s game. Then in 1992, the Orioles pushed my tickets back to the 3rd row, a big difference for conversation. Our chats were reduced to friendly waves and shouts of How’s the family doing. My attendance has dropped to 25-30 games a year and every now then Ernie would shout out that I need to attend more often. Ernie Tyler REST IN PEACE. Thursday night I will give the 10 bell salute for a great Baltimorean and a great Oriole.
