Forward Haukur Palsson is leaving the University of Maryland to pursue a professional basketball career in Europe, head coach Mark Turgeon announced Monday. “Hawk informed us today that he intends on pursuing a professional basketball career in Europe,” said Turgeon. “He wants to be closer to home and to be able to start providing for his family. We appreciate Hawk’s contributions to Maryland basketball and we will always wish him the best in his professional basketball career.” from umterps.com
It is utterly amazing. Reports from Europe were that Hawk was scoring in the 20s each game. Toward the end of last year, he displayed a fine outside shot and I am sure Turgeon was hoping that additional points from the Hawk were forthcoming this year. But we will never know. So long Hawk!!!!

That’s gonna hurt. He was likely going to be our starting PF this year. Hopefully some of the big recruits start lining up for 2012.

may hurt a little short term because hawk was one of few players we have over 5-8. however he would be overmatched by most power forwards. his specialty was outside shooting but since md will have no inside presence teams will overplay our perimeter shooters and hawk not being very athletic would have had trouble getting a lot of good looks at the basket so his shooting would have been compromised. in the long run i think md will be better served offering the scholarship to someone in the 2012 0r 13 class. preferably to someone who is good enough to start on his h.s. team where hawk was a bench player on his

This season is going to be tough. We better hope no one gets injured or in foul trouble.
