Former Maryland and Notre Dame lacrosse athlete turned pro football player Will Yeatman made his debut with the New England Patriots on Friday in their preseason win against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Yeatman, who was undrafted but signed by the Patriots this offseason, played in the third quarter of the Patriots’ 47-12 win. He lined up at tight end, his position on Maryland’s football team and the position he told Inside Lacrosse‘s Danielle Bernstein that he would prefer to play in the NFL.
With rookie quarterback Ryan Mallett (Arkansas) taking the snaps, Yeatman was thrown to three times with two receptions. The first pass, out of the shotgun, was incomplete up the middle. After a timeout and a delay of game from Mallett, the ball went to Yeatman for the next two plays. On 2-and-15, Mallett connected with Yeatman for a 9-yard completion. The next play, they connected again to the opposite side of the field for a 5-yard-gain, taking the Pats to the Jacksonville 10.
Bechta 9his agent) goes on to say that 14 teams were interested in Yeatman. When I talked to Yeatman a few days before he signed with the Patriots, he told me it was around eight teams in the running. Bechta clarifies why he chose New England. Belichick was a huge part of it. “Bill Belichick talked to me for 30 minutes describing his plan for Will in detail. I was impressed by how much he knew about Will and how many people he spoke to, including his former Lacrosse coaches. It was a tough decision as there were other attractive opportunities but I knew I had the head coach invested in the client’s development.”
Bruce adds: I was very disappointed the Ravens didn’t get in the hunt for Yeatman. He will be playing on Sundays!!!
