Speechless in College Park—Tremendous Performance By CJ Brown To No Avail as Dropped passes, Special teams Mistakes Lead To #8 ? Clemson Victory Over The Terps—56-45

Observations of a tremendous opportunity that quickly slopped away:

A tremendous offensive game plan fell victim to dropped passes by Terrapin receivers last night . I will definitely admit that I was wrong about CJ Brown. Maryland now has what most teams covet –2 excellent Collegiate Quarterbacks. While Danny is mired in a Sophomore slump, CJ Brown ran for a Terrapin QB record 167 yds while still completing  3 touchdown passes. Yes his passing was not spot on the entire game but many, many drops threw off the game plan and probably his confidence and accuracy. Ronnie Tyler’s 2nd quarter drop of an absolutely perfect thrown touchdown pass stopped the Terps from possibly running away from the Tigers. The drops have become painful to watch.

The option offense is a thing of beauty when ran well. CJ ran it as well as you could expect for a first time. 167 yds!!!! Incredible. Meggett pounded out the tough yards and for the most part the offense was fluid. Except the drops.

The defense certainly bent in the first 3 quarters but never really broke. remember 35-17 lead in the 3rd quarter. How did it disappear so fast?

Sammy Watkins is certainly incredible yet after a tremendous drive capped by a 4th down TE screen to Furstenburg for a TD, we again kicked off short and right to Watkins. There is no conceivable way these were the instructions. After a horrendous start, Tahj Boyd settled down and picked the defense apart. His passes were pinpoint often threading them between 2 or 3 Maryland defenders. You just can’t allow 600 offensive yards, including 4 TD passes, and expect to win.

CJ’s 1 interception when the Terps were up by 18 initiated the comeback. Up by 18 in the 3rd, I wonder if thoughts were given to get out of the no huddle and try to use some clock, but we never had that chance.

Danny was on the sideline helping in every way he could, not sulking or hiding because he didn’t play. Believe me his role on this will still be instrumental this year as teams figure out how to stop CJ’s running.

Kickoff coverage has been a problem all year. The solution–who knows?

Remember this morning on Terp Talk, DC I ended the show predicting a Maryland victory. Why because like last week I knew that Clemson and Georgia Tech were so overrated it’s ridiculous. We were not playing LSU, Alabama, or Wisconsin. Clemson’s defense was pathetic. The Terrapins gained almost 500 yards and that includes all of the drops. By the way do you think Alabama would have kicked a FG after driving 95 yards and faced with a 4th and 1 on the 1 yard line. Dabo you will never win a National Title with that lack of heart.

The silver lining in this game is that the Terps seem on the cusp of getting the job done. When you start 5 freshmen on defense I guess what happened tonight was inevitable but 6 games are left. By the way Virginia defeated the 6-0 Georgia Tech team inCharlottesvile today.

I do believe it is crucial to the program to go 4-2 the rest of the way even if we wind up back in the Military Bowl.

it’s 3 hours after the game, I just watched the end of True Romance with Christian Slater , my head is cleared , the game is a blur and yes I believe in Coach Edsall more then ever. Our day will come , maybe not this year but not that far away!!! What a night of football in College Park!!!!

I guess I was only speechless for a little while.

yes it’s crucial to get back to the military bowl. a bowl game which equates to your team didn’t have a good yr but won at elast 6 games. if edsall doesn’t learn how to use timeouts md will be in the draino toilet bowl in flushing, ny.
