– Evan Smotrycz, a 6-foot-9, 235-pound forward who played the past two seasons at the University of Michigan, has committed to play at the University of Maryland, head coach Mark Turgeonannounced Monday.
Smotrycz played in all 34 games and started 18 last season for the Wolverines, who tied for the Big Ten regular-season championship and went 24-10. He averaged 7.7 points and 4.9 rebounds in 21.1 minutes per game for Michigan as a sophomore last season and led the team with a .435 percentage from 3-point range.
“The ACC is definitely a different style of game than the Big Ten, which is something I’m looking forward to,” Smotrycz toldThe Washington Post. “I was just really comfortable around the coach and the kids on the team. They are great coaches and very relatable – all really good guys. And it’s the same with the team. I thought it was just a beautiful campus and a really good opportunity to play for a really big-time program.”
“He’s a stretch power-forward who can really shoot the ball,” said Turgeon. “He has a good feel for the game. He played a lot of minutes on a Big Ten-championship team. Evan is a matchup nightmare at his position. He’s a great kid and really wants to be at Maryland. He’s another great piece to what we’re trying to put together here.”
Smotrycz (pronounced “SMAHT-rich”) had 12 double-digit scoring efforts last season, twice hitting his career-high of 20 points (vs. Oakland, vs. Bradley) and had 15 points in an NCAA Tournament game against Ohio University. He had three consecutive double-doubles with points and rebounds in December.
Smotrycz will sit the 2012-13 season as a transfer and will have two seasons remaining to play for the Terrapins.
