Katie Schwarzmann racked up a career-high eight points to help No. 3 Maryland defeat No. 6 Loyola 17-11 Saturday in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship.
Maryland (19-3) punched its ticket to the NCAA semifinals for the fourth consecutive season and the 20th time overall since the tournament began in 1983. Schwarzmann, a Tewaaraton Award finalist for the second straight season, established career bests in both points (8) and assists (4). Brooke Griffin added four goals and Karri Ellen Johnson tallied four points on a pair of goals and two assists.
After trailing Loyola 5-3 midway through the first half, the Terps utilized an explosive 5-0 run in a six-minute period in-and-around the 10-minute mark. Alex Aust recorded two goals to pace the attack in the run and help spark Maryland to a 9-6 halftime lead.
The teams exchanged a pair of two-goal runs each to open the second stanza. Leading 13-9 with 12 minutes remaining, Maryland reeled off another four unanswered goals, led by a pair from Schwarzmann, to push the lead to seven before a late Loyola goal capped the scoring at 17-11.
After only managing two saves in the first half, senior Brittany Dipper stepped up big in the second period, tallying six, including three crucial stops to set a tone in the beginning of the stanza.
The most telling statistic of the game fell at the draw control where the Terps doubled up the Greyhounds 20-10. Johnson ended the game with nine draws and Schwarzmann added another seven. Kristy Black tallied two caused turnovers and two ground balls to aid in Maryland’s solid re-defending effort.

Maryland’s defense held Greyhound star Marlee Paton without a goal for the first time in 26 consecutive games. With four goals Saturday, Schwarzmann moved up to No. 8 all-time on Maryland’s single season goals list with 69.
“First I’d like to congratulate Loyola on a phenomenal season,” head coach Cathy Reese said. “Obviously Jen (Adams) and Dana (Dobbie) are two Maryland alums and two of our best friends so this was a game that we knew was going to come down at some point. I’m just proud of them and the job they have done at Loyola and the season they have had.
