Terps UConn Preview from sportschatplace.com

I had to search the internet to find a site that Picked The Terps. Here’s the theory that bugs me—Temple was a 10 1/2 point favorite last week and when the Terps won the first expression from non-Terp fans was Temple was no good. So much for the vaunted Temple rushing game.

Connecticut hits the road after a tough home loss to another ACC opponent – the North Carolina State Wolfpack. UConn was unable to get much going offensively this past Saturday on their way to a tough 10-7 loss. Defense was the theme in this contest and NC State’s ability to win the turnover battle is what won them the game. Chandler Whitmer struggled in his first real test throwing for 200 yards and 3 interceptions. Whitmer had some tough breaks – deflected passes, fourth down picks and was constantly pressured by the Wolfpack defensive front. The running game for UConn was not much better as Lyle McCombs accounted for a pedestrian 60 yards on 20 carries – McCombs is still looking for the type of showings fans became accustomed to seeing his freshman year. The Huskie defense continues to be impressive as they held a fairly potent NC State offense to 258 total yards and forced a turnover. The defense may need to set the tone again for the Huskies this week as the Maryland run defense has been one of the surprises of the ACC in the early going this season and should be ready for Lyle McCombs.

The Maryland Terrapins shocked many by hanging on to win a sloppy affair against the heavily favored Temple Owls on the road. The Terrapins avenged a 38-7 Temple throttling last year and did so with very strong run defense. The Terrapins, who gave up 5 rushing touchdowns to Bernard Pierce a year ago, held the Temple rushing attack to 2 yards per carry and a measly 52 yards rushing – the lowest in nearly two years for the Owls. Temple came into the game averaging 200 yards per contest but could never find a seam as the Maryland line was in the backfield and closing up holes all game. The Terps built a 26-3 halftime lead behind the strong play of freshman quarterback Perry Hills who threw for two passes and rushed for one after a poor showing against FCS William and Mary last season. Temple abandoned the run early in the second half and exploited the injury plagued secondary of the Terps. After multiple fumbles and a 24-3 run by Temple, Hills composed himself and marched Maryland down the field for a huge touchdown that iced the game and gave Maryland their first road win since 2010. The Terps are now 2-0 and have matched their win total from last season and should return a few key starters for week 3 as they look to continue their early season momentum.

This one should be close as both teams have somewhat struggled offensively and relied on strong run defenses this season. The home field advantage should be big for the Terrapins who seem to have turned a corner and have begun believing in themselves. The Huskies will have to get an accurate performance from Whitmer and should be able need to have more of a passing presence if they are going to get the win. Maryland returns 2-3 key players on defense, most importantly in the secondary and squeaks out a close one to keep their early season success alive.
