After the stretch of games where the Terps played Florida, Penn, James Madison and Northwestern, this week could be considered something of a breather in the women’s lacrosse schedule. Maryland traveled to 2-7 (now 2-8) Georgetown where they picked up a 12-3 win Wednesday night and they will host Big Ten bottom feeder Rutgers on Saturday.
As for Wednesday’s game, the Terps got off some early shots but were either not placing them well or encountered a sharp focused Hoyas’ goalie. Maryland missed their first seven shots and Georgetown Keeper Maddy Fisher picked up four saves in that stretch. The Terrapins’ defense and goalie Alex Fitzpatrick were just as effective on the other end holding the Hoyas scoreless.
They needed over 13 minutes but the Terps finally broke through on Zoe Stukenberg’s 21st goal of the season. Taylor Cummings picked up the first of her five assists on the score. The Hoyas tied the score at one about four minutes later but that was their last hurrah.
The Terps ran off four straight to end the half. Brooke Griffin scored back to back goals – her 21st and 22nd for the season – and Megan Whittle and Cummings rounded out the scoring as Maryland took a 5-1 lead into the break.
Unlike the first half, Maryland scored three goals in the first 6:07 of the second half. Cummings rang up her second and Whittle, who finished the night with four goals, scored back to back to notch her sixth hat trick in her first 11 college games. Georgetown finally ended the Terrapins string of seven goals to draw within 8-2 with just over 21 minutes to play and ending a 21 minute scoring drought.
Cummings and Whittle put the Terps into double digits taking less than three minutes to do so. The Hoyas didn’t need 21 minutes to score their third goal but with 12:23 left it would be their last of the night.
Cummings was involved in Maryland’s final two goals scoring one and assisting Taylor Hensh on the the other. Cummings, the reigning Tewaaraton Award winner had a monstrous night. Although she had only six draw controls, for the fourth consecutive game, she controlled more draws than the opposing team’s total. In addition to 6 draw controls, 5 assists and 4 goals, she had 3 caused turnovers and picked up 5 ground balls.
The top ranked Terps are now 11-0 on the season and 1-0 in B1G play. We can expect them to add one to each of those numbers when Rutgers comes to College Park on Saturday.
