Preview of Rutgers

Rutgers (6-9, 0-2) plays its second consecutive Big Ten road game when it travels to College Park to meet Maryland (13-1, 2-0) in a 7 p.m. tip-off on Wednesday at the 17,950-seat XFINITY Center. The Terrapins are ranked No. 3 in both the AP and coaches polls. The Scarlet Knights will be working to win their first road game as a league member and to capture their highest ranked victory in program history. RU defeated No. 4 Wisconsin at home last season, but has never defeated a top 10-ranked opponent on the road. The Terrapins have won seven straight and are 8-0 at home this season.

The game will mark the ninth meeting on the collegiate hardwood between Rutgers and Maryland dating back to 1940 with the Terrapins holding a 5-3 edge. Maryland has won three straight in the series, including both match-ups last season. The Scarlet Knights are 1-2 on UM’s home floor, including a hard-fought 73-65 loss last at the XFINITY Center last January, when RU limited the Terrapins to a 34.4 percent (21-of-61) shooting. Rutgers fell to No. 10/9 Maryland, 60-50, during senior night at the RAC in the last match-up on March 3. Greg Lewis had 14 points and the Scarlet Knights established a 21-8 advantage in second chance points.

Despite 20 points from sophomore guard Mike Williams on 7-of-12 shooting, Rutgers fell to Wisconsin 79-57 in front of 17, 287 fans at the Kohl Center on Saturday afternoon. Senior guard Bishop Daniels added 11 points for the Scarlet Knights in their first league road game of the season. Wisconsin shot 53 percent, including 8-of-18 (44 percent) from behind the arc. Rutgers made 40 percent of its field goal attempts and 42 percent (5-of-12) from long distance. The Badgers used their size advantage to establish a 37-25 buffer on the glass, which contributed to a 34-24 discrepancy in points in the paint and an 8-2 advantage in second chance points for UW.
