Terps Top Northwestern in OT 62-56

Melo Trimble scored 18 points, Diamond Stone made a pivotal three-point play with 1:13 left in overtime and No. 5/7 Maryland defeated Northwestern 62-56 Tuesday night at XFINITY Center.

“Some nights things don’t go well and you’ve just got to figure out a way to win,” he said. “And we did that.”

Maryland (17-2, 6-1 Big Ten) survived a 17-point second half to complete a season sweep of the Wildcats (15-5, 3-4).

This one was far tougher than the 72-59 rout in Illinois on Jan. 2.

But Trimble came up big in overtime, opening the scoring with a three-point play and getting assists on two baskets, including the layup by Stone that put Maryland ahead 58-55.

Stone finished with 11 points and Robert Carter Jr. had 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Putting the ball in the basket was a mighty chore for the Terrapins, who earned the victory on the strength of their play on the other end of the court.

“Our team defense was terrific,” Turgeon said.

talent won last night. i think we could have seen duke’s next head coach. collins knows how to coach. northwestern played really well. completely out hustled md on the boards but their free throw shooting shot them in the foot.

terps played very good defense last night and the cream did rise to the top with melo and stone making the big plays late in the game.

layman played a nice all around game. his shooting wasn’t good but he got rebounds, blocked some shots, played some d and hustled. carter had pretty some good numbers 10 pts 14 boards and some horrible numbers as in 5 turnovers which is a joke for a power forward. sulaimon couldn’t score but played tough d all night. give dodd some credit as well. nickens made a pair of much needed 3’s

turgeon must somehow someway get brantley engaged. ram plays hard, plays with great intensity and heart but lacks any size and his skill level is more d 3 than d1.

turgeon mentioned something i’ve been yelling about for a couple of months now…the team needs to become more physical , particularly inside and on the boards.

bottom line, terps won and now go to east lansing to play sparty
