Big Day For Lacrosse on the Road—-#11 Terps 17 Princeton 5 #1 Terps 14 #3 Cuse 18

Comments on an offensive display by the men today:

Colin Heacock has come into his own. 3 goals today and he is now using his physicality and rocket shot to help lead the Terps attack

UMBC transfer Pat Young looked great today with 2 goals

Princeton’s lack of interior defense and mistake filled offense created this blowout today

Next up Albany

The ladies were in a back and forth battle until finally pulling away late in the 2nd half.

Sophomore midfielder Taylor Hensh tallied five points as the No.1 Maryland women’s lacrosse team (5-0) defeated No. 3 Syracuse (6-2) 14-9 Saturday afternoon in the Carrier Dome.

“I’m really proud of our team’s effort, especially in the second half,” head coach Cathy Reese said. “I think we played well defensively, and in the second half we were better offensively. It was a good win for the team and the program.”

Hensh’s five points came on four goals and one assist. Senior midfielder Taylor Cummings recorded a hat trick while freshman midfielder Jen Giles scored twice. Freshman midfielder Caroline Steele, senior attacker Caroline Wannen, junior midfielder Zoe Stukenberg, senior midfielder Bryn Boucher and sophomore attacker Megan Whittle each scored once.

Regarding men’s lacrosse, I’m looking for all the people who bravely shout about the lack of offensive scheme of a John Tillman coached team. I know they’ll be back the next time Maryland struggles offensively but by my math, the Terps have scored 29 goals in the last two games. There’s a big difference between playing Drexel and Princeton and playing Yale and Notre Dame.

On the women’s side, Offensively, Maryland looks like they’re evolving into a team that will be very difficult to defend. Think about this, Maryland pulled away to a 14-9 win. Megan Whittle took only one shot (she scored). Taylor Cummings scored three times in about two and a half minutes late in the second half. Up to that point, she’d only taken a single shot early in the first half. Then she went 3-3. Last week Jen Giles and Kacie Longo had breakout games. Yesterday, it was Taylor Hensh. Next week it could be Caroline Steele.

Also, there’s not enough people talking about Maryland’s defense and about Megan Taylor in goal. The Terrapins’ back line of Morgan Torggler, Alice Mercer, Nadine Hadnagy, Alice McKay and Julia Braig has been exceptional – and Mercer is the only senior. In the six games they haven’t played Maryland, North Carolina averages almost 20 goals per game. They scored seven against the Terps.

Yesterday, Syracuse scored nine. It’s only the second time this season they’ve been held under 10. The other was a 9-6 win over Binghamton notable because neither Kayla Treanor nor Halle Majorana, the leading scorers for the Orange, played a minute in that contest. (Coach Gait also held some other starters out as well but I didn’t look into it that deeply.) And Megan Taylor, who’s only a freshman, has been borderline spectacular in goal.

Looking forward to seeing how Maryland handles Florida in their next contest.

there might be 46 people in the world following college womens lacrosse.

by the way the lead story should be md nsu basketball not lacrosse

C’mon, Freddy. Even allowing the hyperbole, you know I never meant to imply that people who aren’t interested in women’s lacrosse should be talking about Maryland’s defense. I meant that anyone reporting or discussing the performance of the team shouldn’t overlook the play of the defense – as most do – and can’t simply focus on Megan Taylor.

Freddy, I know your sarcasm but you weren’t my target audience in my initial comment. And look, I go to field hockey. There’s even less interest in that than WLAX and field hockey’s a game that requires great skill and stamina.

For WLAX, it’s a shame. When teams play and don’t stall – a tactic that will be eliminated next year with the shot clock – WLAX is a wide open sport that’s fun to watch. It’s not nearly as bruising as MLAX and I know the fouls can be frequent and are sometimes arcane but they have to be because the only protective equipment the women wear is goggles. There’s also a real flow and athleticism when you watch a team like Maryland.

And frankly, every Maryland fan should be following what is by far the most successful sports program in College Park.
