13 Years of Frustration Ends Tonight–Terps vs Kansas –My Keys to Victory By the Numbers

#1 Decent start for the Terps+ or minus 4 at the 12 minute break

#2 No more then 10 turnovers—to think there will be less is ridiculous

#3 Trimble and Layman combine for 40 points—substitution of Rasheed for Layman –same total

#4 Single digit offensive rebounds for Kansas

#5 Double digit assists

#6 Game in the 60’s–the higher it goes favors Kansas

Summary—Terps are playing the #1 team in the nation in what will seem like like a road game but won’t be in Allen Fieldhouse

The Terps can not ever let Kansas get the lead into the teens.. Expect to see some pressing by Maryland early on to get loose.

can the terps beat kansas tonight? yes they can but they need to play disciplined smart ball. i hope turgeon lets the terps run rather than play slow. if you have talent you have to let them play, not over coach them.

i expect kansas to force md to shoot from the outside early to see if the red white black and gold can hit some shots after going 1-18 from 3 against hawaii.

if md can knock down some early treys that will force kansas to extend their defense which will open up the inside for stone and carter and make it easier for trimble and sulaimon to drive to the basket.

md must limit turnovers and second chance opportunities for the jayhawks.

md usually rises up and plays well vs good teams except when they got blown out in bloomington vs the hoosiers.

you know i love md but you know i call it like i see it…i ain’t no homer. terps 84 kansas 79 as the terps hit their free throws down the stretch to beat the one seed and move on to play the winner of nova-miami.

if maryland loses i would call it a disappointing season. too much talent this yr to get knocked off in the sweet 16.

    go terps!

84-79 Freddy? What are you smoking down there in Boca? I don’t see either squad even smelling 80.

Your prediction of a Maryland win seems “homer-ish” to me. Kansas is a 6.5 or 7 point favorite in this game and in their sixteen game win streak they’re 13-3 ATS and two of those failures to cover came when they were double digit favorites. On the other hand, the wise guys seem to think the Terps will cover because they’re letting 80% of the money come down on KU.

You wrote that MD losing tonight would be a disappointing season. Win or lose, I think you’ve already defined this as a disappointing season. I think it’s an odd perspective to say that the outcome of a game against the top overall seed in a single elimination tournament makes or breaks a season. Had the season not been a disappointment these two teams would face each other in a later round.

Regression to the mean suggests that Maryland should shoot well from behind the arc – something on the order of 10-15 or 13-20.

You’ll have to explain to me how and where you see a juncture between “disciplined smart basketball” and letting a team run. Speeding the pace of play usually leads to an increase in mistakes (e.g. turnovers) both mental and physical.

Oh, and the fellow who died was Joe Garagiola

sound angry todd. chill non-rev chill.

here’s the real 411. really doesn’t matter what you or i think…ok let’s amend that ..it does matter what i think i am a kohan. but all seriousness aside. it doesn’t matter. doesn’t affect the game or how the teams play. it’s an opinion and your opinion of me and my comments are of no concern to me and the same the other way. that’s why they are opinions

Not angry, Freddy. Just a genuine difference of opinion and some puzzlement. Here’s why I was puzzled:
When the MD women’s basketball ream won the national championship in 2006, UNC was at or near the top of the NCAA in turnovers largely because they played at such a frenetic pace. Their coach, Sylvia Hatchell, knew their pace generated turnovers but she was fine with that because combined with their defensive pressure, the team made up in volume for the possessions they lost to turnovers. UNC was a very high scoring team that lost only two games that season – both to Maryland.

If you’re talking about my spelling correction, I simply wanted to pay proper respect to the man.

I should correct myself about the score. Kansas could get to 80. I don’t see the Terps doing that. Maryland’s surpassed 80 only four times this season in games played away from the X-Box (and that includes the game against Princeton in Baltimore). On the other side of the coin, Kansas has given up 80 or more in four games this season and two of those were overtime games. I think if KU gets close to or exceeds 80, the Terps lose by double digits.

on a sad note joe garogeola has passed away at age 90.

yogi berra’s childhoood friend has a 257 lifetime batting average and spent 57 years in the broadcast booth.

many of us grew up enjoying joe’s humor on the game of the week. he also hosted the today show for 4 yrs and even at times sat in for johnny carson on the tonight show.

Okay, now on to Bruce because I think he might have been smoking the same stuff as Freddy (or maybe you’re both drinking the same Kool-Aid).

No more than 10 turnovers? How many times has that happened this season – especially against a quality opponent?

You’re asking for a game in the 60s but want two players to combine for 40+. That indicates getting minimal production from the front court (Stone & Carter) and basically nothing off the bench

Single digit offensive rebounds for Kansas? I think we’d need to call Miracle Max for that one. Kansas averages almost 11 ORs game and Maryland gives up an average of over 11.

Neither of you mentioned what the Terps need to do defensively to win. KU shoots over 42% from three. Of the four guys who’ve have basically started every game, only Frank Mason shoots under 40% and he’s at 39%. Then they have a guy named Greene who comes off the bench and shoots threes at nearly 50%. though he doesn’t shoot a lot.

I’d say the Terps will need a superior effort on the defensive end slowing down a team that makes almost half its shots.

Terps make 3’s they can win in a close game if they are off from long distance it will be a long night.

Don’t think it is realistic to expect the team to limit turnovers and compete on the offensive glass as they haven’t done it all season.
