Nickens and Cowan Lead the Way as Terps Roll to 95-61 Win over Catawba—Freshman Very Impressive

Junior Jared Nickens led all scorers with 17 points, as Maryland knocked off Catawba 95-61 in its preseason exhibition game at the XFINITY Center Saturday afternoon.

Five Terps finished in double figures, including freshman guard Anthony Cowan, who posted 15 points, five assists, two steals and two boards in his first career action at XFINITY. Fellow freshman Kevin Huerter added a game-high six assists, in addition to eight points and a pair of steals.

“I was proud of my group today,” said head coach Mark Turgeon. “We showed great improvement from the week before and we executed at a pretty high level…I thought we defended pretty well… we shot the ball well and we shared the ball well.”

The Terps distributed the ball well throughout the game, posting 23 assists on 33 makes while shooting 57 percent from the floor. Maryland never trailed in the contest, maintaining a double-digit lead throughout the second half to secure the win.

Damonte Dodd paced the Terps on the glass, finishing with 10 rebounds while adding eight points and four blocks.

The Terps will return to the court on Friday, November 11 for their season opener when the team hosts American at the XFINITY Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
