“Give Rutgers a lot of credit. Steve is doing a great
job with his team and they play the way they
have to in order to give themselves a chance.
They were really prepared for us. They were
much more prepared for us than we were for them. They were sitting on all our stuff early and
really guarded us well. We were lucky to be up at half and I felt like we hit a big three going into
halftime. Then we were really good. We really played well on both ends and made some shots.
Kevin Huerter was good — six assists one turnover. Melo Trimble made some big shots for us. I
thought defensively — except for rebounding — we were pretty good.”
On Rutgers’ offense:
“Corey Sanders is so fast. They put in a new play and we never adjusted to it until the very end
of the game. That got him going. There were a couple of plays our bigs were late on — some
ball screen stuff. I thought our ball screen defense was better in the second half and I thought
our team defense was better in the second half.”
On the status of Melo Trimble:
“He’s shooting the ball better and that’s great to see. I thought his defense was pretty darn good
too. I was worried about him because I didn’t know what we were going to get out of him.
Yesterday he looked so bad and today he looked so much better. He said he felt fine and I
subbed him out early. He said he still felt fine so
I played him a little more than I wanted to play
him tonight. I kept asking him how he felt and he kept saying he was fine.”
On the team having its best start in 18 seasons:
“I don’t think any of us expected this. To be 18-
2 and 6-1 in conference play — I didn’t expect it.
You have to win a lot of close games which I th
ink we’ve done. The exciting thing for me is that
we can get so much better. We can play better than we have been playing, starting with
rebounding and taking care of the ball. It’s not something we set a goal for and we didn’t talk
about it with our team.”
