For the first time in five games, the Maryland women’s basketball team dominated a weak Big Ten opponent displaying their full capabilities dismantling a young and undersized Illinois squad 94-49 in Champaign Thursday night.
Coach Brenda Frese made liberal use of her bench. Not only did all 12 players get on the floor, but the bench played more total minutes than the starters and no one played more than 22 minutes. No only did everyone play, but everyone scored at least five points and everyone also had at least one rebound.
Brionna Jones, who got only 19 minutes of playing time saw her string of 10 consecutive double doubles come to an end. The senior scored 11 points but notched only five rebounds. Fellow senior Shatori Walker-Kimbrough led Maryland with 14 points and was the only other Terrapin to reach double figures.
In a mere 22 minutes, freshman point guard Destiny Slocum scored eight points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out nine of the Terps’ 22 assists. Slocum now has dealt 20 assists while picking up only five turnovers over the last two games.
The Terrapins dominated the score and built up absurd margins in most statistical categories including a nearly incomprehensible 61-34 rebounding margin. They held a 44-22 advantage in points in the paint and their bench outscored the Illini bench 47-2.
Maryland will enter the second half of B1G play a perfect 8-0 in conference and the win keeps the Terps a half game in front of Ohio State who improved to 8-1 registering an 88-76 win at Minnesota Thursday night.
The Terps return to action Sunday afternoon when they host the Iowa Hawkeyes in a rematch of a game where Maryland pulled away late to a 98-82 win after trailing 47-44 at the half. The game is scheduled for a 2:00 pm tipoff and can be seen on ESPN2.
