Terrapin Times quick Q and A w Turgeon: TT caught up with Mark Turgeon for some quick updates before he headed out on the road. He laughed to himself about the angst among fans with Melo’s departure. “We have lots of guys ready to step up their game for us,” he said, citing particularly Anthony Cowan, Kevin Huerter and Justin Jackson, who burst on the scene last year as freshmen starters. Cowan is already one of the most improved players on the team, improving key areas like finishing at the rim, being more aggressive and his on-floor leadership. Huerter is bigger and stronger and will not be guarded easily by smaller foes this season. Jackson’s confidence — always the issue with him last year when he disappeared at times — is brimming and should make him much more valuable this season as he transitions to a larger role on the perimeter. Turgeon gushed about incoming freshman Darryl Morsell. “He gives us something we really don’t have as a guard that can defend and rebound, one of those players that makes everyone better. It’s all about winning (with him).” He called Bruno Fernando a “big time athlete” that is “tough, can get in the lane, can shot-block and has versatility to allow us to do some different things.” Transfer Sean Obi was targeted to help on the glass, where his big body and experience will be so valuable and don’t underestimate what that means every day in practice. Turgeon was disappointed in the rebounding last year and improvement in that area can fuel better play in so many areas — closing out defensive sequences, igniting more fast breaks and creating more transition baskets. The glut of big men, including an unrecognizable Ivan Bender, who has lost 20 pounds and is trying to put muscle back on now (Turgeon called him one of the smartest players he has ever coached), is key as Michal Cekovsky is still coming back from that broken ankle suffered late last year. Terps are hopeful he’s a “go” by end of July and really ready to integrate back in at 100 percent in August. Unsolicitedly, Turg also mentioned Josh Tomaic among his big men, talking about his improvement, too. Dion Wiley has gotten in better shape and Jared Nickens impressed all with his leadership in the spring. Turg also didn’t rule out the possibility of adding players this year with the two scholarships he has available. “You never stop looking and trying to make your team better. It’s a year-by-year deal in college basketball now. If we can add a piece that will help, we’ll definitely do that.”
