Keith Cavanaugh and terrapintimes.com reported tonite at 11:04 PM that Mychal Parker a major target of Maryland’s coaching staff will announce his intention to attend the University of Maryland sometime Thursday and join the 2010 recruiting class. University of Maryland senior Greivis Vasquez was among the student-athletes named Wednesday as a preseason candidate for the 2009-10 John Wooden Award, given to the men’s basketball national player of the year. Vasquez, a second team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection as both a sophomore and junior, was among 50 players selected to the preseason list, including 10 players from the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Everyone at Maryland is saddened by the death of Bob Novak. Gary released the following statement today.
“Robert Novak was a true friend of Maryland Basketball. Both Lefty Driesell and myself enjoyed Bob’s loyal support. His friendship never waivered. Once Bob and I became friends, we were friends for life. Bob’s college basketball teams were Maryland and Illinois, his alma mater. I always take pride in all the places I have watched the Terrapin Basketball team play. I have been to Nashville, Miami, Tallahassee, Kansas City, Syracuse, Atlanta,Durham, Chapel Hill, Clemson, Raleigh, Greensboro, Largo, Verizon Center, Civic Center, The Palestra, Anaheim, The Licouras Center at Temple, UVA, Madison Square Garden, Charlotte, and many more. 3. Maryland: The Terps had a very good season, but will be better with some bulk and talent inside. Greivis Vasquez is one of the best guards in the country, but his emotional play seems to get more press than his skills. Vasquez is a complete player whom I believe is underrated. ESPN is reporting that ex-Terrapin Joe Smith has signed a 1 year deal with Atlanta. Joe finished last season with the Cavs but was used sparingly in the playoffs.
Ryan Randle played for Saint-Etienne B.C. of the French ProB league. Saint-Etienne finished in 8th place in the regular season and lost in the quarterfinals of the playoffs to Rodney Elliott’s Levallois team. Ryan scored 8.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game (14 games).
