The University of Maryland officially capped the 2011 football season Sunday afternoon at Stamp Student Union with its annual banquet. Joe Vellano led the way by taking home three awards. The junior from Rexford, N.Y., was named the Ray Krouse Award winner as team MVP, best defensive player and top lineman. Gonnella, a native of Monroe, N.Y., secured the George C. Defensive linemen Keith Bowers and Andre Monroe, and linebacker Lorne Goree were all selected to the College Football News (CFN) Freshman All-America team on Friday.
Monroe, who ranks second in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) in sacks among freshmen (0.56 per game), earned a spot on the second team. Bowers and Goree were honorable mention choices.

The Walter Camp Football Foundation made the announcement Thursday evening as part of The Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN.
A two-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference choice (second team in 2010; first team in 2011), Vellano posted 94 tackles, including 7.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks, four pass breakups and two fumble recoveries this season.

This is a huge day for Maryland football. 5’9 210 athlete Kenneth Goins has verballed to to the University of Maryland. Tremendous athletes from Baltimore’s football powerhouse have eluded the Terps since 1984. Perhaps this triggers a change.
