Maryland senior defensive lineman Joe Vellano on Thursday was named to the watch lists for the Bronco Nagurski Trophy and the Outland Trophy.

The Nagurski Trophy is given annually to the nation’s best defensive player by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and the Charlotte Touchdown Club; the Outland Trophy is given to the best interior lineman in college football and includes 71 players, just 18 of which are defensive tackles. The University of Maryland officially capped the 2011 football season Sunday afternoon at Stamp Student Union with its annual banquet. Joe Vellano led the way by taking home three awards. The junior from Rexford, N.Y., was named the Ray Krouse Award winner as team MVP, best defensive player and top lineman. Gonnella, a native of Monroe, N.Y., secured the George C. Cook Memorial Award for the senior with the highest grade-point average and the C.P. “Lefty” McIntosh Public Service Award.

Maryland’s Joe Vellanowas voted to the second team of the 2011 Walter Camp All-America team.

The Walter Camp Football Foundation made the announcement Thursday evening as part of The Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN.

A two-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference choice (second team in 2010; first team in 2011), Vellano posted 94 tackles, including 7.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks, four pass breakups and two fumble recoveries this season.

Maryland’s Joe Vellano was honored Monday by the Atlantic Coast Conference for his play in Saturday’s 21-16 loss at No. 13 Georgia Tech. Vellano was all over the field against the triple-option attack of the Yellow Jackets, who were held well below their season averages in points (21 – GT averaged 51.6 ppg), rushing (272 – GT averaged 378.2 pg) and total offense (386 – GT averaged 587 pg).

The Rotary Lombardi Award Committee made the announcement Tuesday with Vellano among 19 players from the Atlantic Coast Conference on the preseason list which will be periodically updated and revised up to the first round of voting to determine the 12 semifinalists in October.
