Laura Merrifield was tabbed Atlantic Coast Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year in women’s lacrosse, as announced Wednesday by league commissioner John Swofford. Merrifield tallied 45 goals and five assists as a senior captain for the ACC champion Terps. In 2011, the midfielder racked up 18 ground balls and 18 draw controls, while tying for second in the league in game-winning goals with four. Merrifield, a kinesiology major from Hertfordshire, England, garnered IWLCA First Team All-America status this season.
The Maryland women’s lacrosse team placed a league-best six players on the 2011 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Team, announced by the conference office on Wednesday. Brittany Dipper, Katie Gallagher, Karri Ellen Johnson, Laura Merrifield, Sarah Mollison andKatie Schwarzmann all garnered honors for the undefeated Terps, who head into this weekend’s ACC Championship as the top seed.
Juniors Karri Ellen Johnson and Kristy Black combined for nine goals to pace No. 1 Maryland past No. 20 Boston College, 20-9, in Atlantic Coast Conference action Sunday. Johnson (5g) led a group of five Terps in double-digit scoring, including Black (4), Laura Merrifield (3), Brandi Jones (2) and Katie Schwarzmann (2). Sarah Mollison dished out a game-high five assists and sophomore Alex Aust added three.
Head coach Cathy Reese has named seniors Sarah Mollison, Katie Gallagher and Laura Merrifield captains for the 2011 campaign.
Mollison served as captain last year as a junior, helping lead Maryland to its first national championship since 2001. The attacker was third on the team last season with 45 goals.
