Annual Bball Reunion at College Park This Weekend

More than 60 former Maryland men’s basketball players return to College Park this weekend to take part in the program’s annual alumni reunion weekend.

“We’ve had a fantastic turnout,” said head coach Mark Turgeon, who welcomed the alumni back with a reception at Samuel Riggs Alumni Center. “It was great to see and visit with so many guys whom have meant so much to Maryland Basketball. We had some former alums return to campus that have not been here, so that made even more special. We’re very appreciative of their support and enthusiasm for Maryland basketball. It is always fun to get everyone together and share stories prior to the start of the season.”

The festivities began Friday with a golf outing and a gathering at the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center.

The alumni and coaches will be recognized at halftime during Maryland football’s game against South Florida tomorrow.

John Gilchrist (2004 ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament Most Valuable Player) and LaRon Profit (All-ACC Performer for each of his four seasons in College Park) returned to campus on Friday. In addition, the 2002 National Championship team was represented by Hall of Fame Head Coach Gary Williams, assistant coach Billy Hahn, Byron Mouton, Drew Nicholas and Juan Dixon, who serves as a special assistant to the head coach Mark Turgeon. Dixon holds numerous Terp records, including career points (2,269), and was named the 2002 NCAA Final Four MVP.

“We have such a strong brotherhood and connection,” added Dixon. “It is just a terrific weekend for all of us to get together, laugh and talk about the great experiences we had at College Park.”

Other notable alumni in town include Len Elmore, who is first all-time in career rebounding average (12.2 rpg) and career rebounds (1,053) and Walt Williams, who is first in the Maryland record books in points in a season (776) and currently serves as the Terps’ radio color analyst and sideline reporter for men’s basketball.
