Layman and Melo Lead Terps to 66-61 Victory over Ohio State

Melo Trimble scored 20 points, Jake Layman added 16 points and 10 rebounds, and No. 8 Maryland made six free throws in the final 25 seconds to beat Ohio State 66-61 on Sunday.

Trimble hit a 3-pointer from the left corner with 2:03 remaining for a 60-55 lead before Marc Loving made a pair of foul shots for Ohio State to trim the lead to three.

Maryland’s Robert Carter, who had 10 points, then made both shots from the line with 24.4 seconds left. JaQuan Lyle made 1 of 2 foul shots for OSU to cut the deficit to 62-58 but Rasheed Sulaimon hit two free throws for Maryland (19-3, 8-2 Big Ten) with 13.5 seconds to go.

Evaluations:

Melo–Solid game –still having shooting problems from the 3 point line–until it really matters—20 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists

Jake–Great game for Jake–16 points on 5-7 shooting, 10 rebounds

Stone 10 points, 8 rebounds–not his best shooting day

Carter—foul trouble limited his minutes–10 points, 7 rebounds

Sulaimon–only shot he made was a crucial 3 down the wire–5 assists–totally unselfish

Dodd–great defense down the wire—little else

Next Game — Weds night at Nebraska at 8:30

md won the game at the free throw line. not going to beat better teams with this type of play. coaching staff MUST develop the bench better.

i think melo is injured to some extent. another solid game by layman, that’s 2 good games in a row. nice effort by dodd. does a lot of little things that doesn’t get noticed by many but is certainly contributing.

the half off court offense remains a mystery. like do they have a half court offense. you don’t see many passes into the post and then the ball is kicked out to the perimeter..or finding a cutter down the lane or kicked out and then the big man re-positions deeper in the post and gets the ball back. you don’t see good passing where they rotate the ball and make the defense move their feet. you don’t see many skip passes. you don’t see the extra pass too often.

they aren’t selfish players. they will share the ball. they need to be coached up better, imo.

once in a while they go high low with carter and either dodd or stone. need to do more of that.

    19-3 and on to lincoln
