University of Maryland head football coach DJ Durkin made his debut at Big Ten Football Media Day Tuesday in Chicago, joined by seniors Michael Dunn and William Likely and junior Jermaine Carter, Jr.

Durkin and players answered questions ranging from the program’s newly installed schemes to the popularity of the game Pokemon Go on campus and the latest emoji craze.

It was Durkin’s infectious energy that was quickly apparent to the media, however, as he spoke with great vigor about the program’s progress and future.

“It’s great to be here as this is one of those events that you mark on your calendar every year,” said Durkin. “It means the start of football, the greatest time of the year.”

Durkin started the day with television and media interviews which were televised nationally on Big Ten Network and ESPNU, before taking the stage at the Big Ten Media Day Kickoff Luncheon’s with the head coaches of the Big Ten Conference.

“We’ve had a great summer and our players are working hard to prepare for the upcoming season,” Durkin said. “I’m excited about how our guys are buying in and holding themselves accountable during their summer workouts.”

Dunn, Likely and Carter also took their turn on media row, taking part in various interviews and television spots for ESPN, Big Ten Network and Fox.

The day wrapped up on the live set of Big Ten Network, as Durkin and the players spoke about the upcoming season.
