Run DMC—Garner 11 Points as Terps Waste National Champion Tar Heels 15-7

Senior Matt Rambo tallied five points and recorded his 200th career point to lead the No. 10 Maryland men’s lacrosse team to a resounding 15-7 victory over No. 14 North Carolina Saturday afternoon.

Rambo reached the milestone on his third point of the day, becoming just the fifth Terrapin in program history to achieve the milestone. Joe Walters (2003-06) was the last Maryland player to reach 200 career points.

Junior Connor Kelly also continued his hot streak against the Tar Heels, recording five points. He now has 18 points in his last four games against UNC. Senior Dylan Maltz led all goal scorers with three goals, while junior Dan Morris made 12 saves in net.

The Maryland offense came out soaring, scoring on each of its first six attempts of the game to open a 6-1 lead.

The early attack was jumpstarted on the defensive end, where Matt Neufeldt caused a turnover and led a transition break. The ball worked its way around the goal before Rambo fed defender Tim Muller for his second career goal.

After Carolina tied the game, 1-1, the Terps began a relentless 5-0 run that included three points from Colin Heacock. Maltz got the run going with a goal and took the brunt of an unnecessary roughness penalty which led to an EMO goal by Heacock just 13 seconds later.

It was much of the same for the Terrapins offensively in the second quarter, as they opened up a 9-2 advantage with 5:39 left in the half on goals from Tim Rotanz, Kelly and Maltz.

Maryland entered the halftime break with a 9-3 lead, scoring its nine goals on just 15 shots.

The Terps did not yield in the second half, scoring four consecutive goals five minutes into the third quarter for a 13-3 lead. The run included an Austin Henningsen goal and two Rambo goals. Rambo’s first goal of the run was the 200th point of his career.

Junior defender Bryce Young was excellent in the game, causing a pair of turnovers and scooping four ground balls.

The Terrapins open Big Ten action next weekend when they host Michigan at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium at 2 pm.
