A Closer Look at DJ Moore – Maryland Wide Receiver

DJ Moore’s Draft Stock

The NFL is starting to learn something Terp fans have known for a while, Maryland football players can play. One of these Terps is DJ Moore, who caught major attention after a surprising Combine 40-yard dash of 4.43, 0.03 seconds faster than Minnesota Vikings and former Terp speedster Stefon Diggs. DJ Moore has elevated from a 3rd or 4th round pick to a potential late 1st or 2nd rounder, here’s why:

Height
Moore was measured at 6-0 feet tall this is a pretty average number comparatively among receivers, but was still considered a big positive as there was concern if Moore was truly 6 feet tall.

Weight
Moore’s body was helped greatly by Maryland strength and Conditioning coach Rick Court. He has grown form a lean freshman, to one of the most physically imposing wideouts that I’ve seen in College Park.  (He looks like a linebacker) That being said, DJ Moore weighed in at 210lbs, right where he needs to be.

Arm length- Hand size
Arm Length- Overall arm length ranges from 30 ¼ to 33 inches, with most guys at about 31-32 inches, DJ measured in at 31 5/8 inches.
Hand Size- Ranges From 8 ¾ inches to 10 inches. Moore measured in at 9 inches, while this is on the smaller size, it is a minor negative overall.

40 Yard Dash
Many didn’t think DJ was fast, he proved them wrong. His third attempt was a 4.42. The third fastest WR in the 2018 Combine. This is a huge positive, a strong 40 time can shoot a prospect to the top of the board. This was the case last season with University of Washington receiver John Ross’s draft stock.

Bench Press
For WR’s this can range from 8-24 reps. DJ Moore’s had 15 reps of 225 lbs., this is better than average and thus a positive.

Vertical
These days when QB’s rely on being able to throw the ball up this becomes a big category for NFL scouts. DJ recorded 39.5” Inches which lands him .5 off the highest in the combine. Another big positive

Film
When it comes down to it the film doesn’t lie and for DJ Moore this is a huge positive. All Maryland fans know that he can flat out play from being the guy that 4 QB’s this year relied on, and making up almost all of the Terps receiving production, he was the guy on this team that could do it all.

Draft Position

My own instinct has DJ being the player that jumps from the 3rd to the 1st round this year, here are the most likely teams to select him.

Ravens 16th
This would be a surprise, but is possible. It is well-known that the Ravens are looking at WR’s. DJ Moore is a considered a borderline top prospect. The issue is that top prospects Calvin Ridley, Christian Kirk, and Courtland Sutton could still be available.

Bills 21st 22nd
The Bills will return their top two guys, but still need steady production. DJ Moore could be a strong addition guy in the late 1st round

Panthers 24th
They plan to “overhaul” their receiving core, and the best place to start an overall is the draft. After trading Kelvin Benjamin at the trade deadline, and having limited cap space this summer, it could make sense for them to select a receiver in the first round.

After the 1st round
Cardinals
Redskins
Cowboys
Colts
Packers
