The picture says it all. It was a very dejected Maryland team having to endure watching UVA celebrate winning the ACC title at Bryd Stadium. All is not lost however, the Terps will rise to #3 in the rankings and by next week this loss will be forgotten. What will be remembered is that it took a stupendous performance by the UVA goalie to defeat them. This game really hurts because the team jumped out to a 3-0 lead but from that point early in the game, Virginia goalie Adam Ghitleman shut down the offense, making 16 that’s right 16 saves on his 21st birthday. As I watched the 3rd quarter from the stands, I remarked to several Cavalier fans who were somewhat heckling me that only the goalie was the difference today–it must be his birthday because the last time he was in College Park, the junior only had 4 saves. Sure enough later on I found it was his birthday. Ghitleman

Let’s give Virginia credit on offense though. Their crisp passing and speed put their players in much easier position to score today. As usual Steele Stanwick led the way. Coach Starsia talked about the victory and the tough ACC schedule.Starsia Post ACC Senior Goalie and Captain Brian Phipps just had little he could do on most of Virginia’s goals. Perhaps the intensity and emotion of Friday’s win over Carolina took its toll on the Terps.
The absence of Will Yeatman (concussion) was devastating for the Terps today. In the first contest, Virginia had no answer for Yeatman’s power moves as he scored 4 goals. Hopefully he will return Saturday for a tough game against Fairfield.
