Terrapins Complete Turnaround Season Defeating Wolfpack 38-31—Finishing 8-4–Torrey Smith 14 Catches and 4 TDS

POST GAME REPORT

Today Danny O’Brien came of age and we might have lost Torrey Smith next year. Danny threw for 417 yards including 4 TDS to Torrey Smith. Torrey had 14 catches for 224 yards. Let’s give some serious credit to Coach Friedgen who really had his troops ready for victory today. the Terps came out flat and ended tenuous but in between they were as good or better then any ACC team.  NC State was knocked out out of the Championship matchup with Virginia Tech. ironically the winner of the division becomes FSU. I guess Jimbo Fisher owes Ralph a call today. It looks like the ACC Champ will have the honor of playing Jim Harbaugh’s Stanford Cardinal in the Orange Bowl.

Here is what I loved about the Terps performance yesterday:

Perhaps my favorite play of the past 5 years or so was when the Terps –up 31-17 got the ball back with 6 minutes left. Everyone was looking for their typical 3 running plays and out. But James Franklin crossed up the Pack, having Danny throw a bomb to Torrey for another TD. That in essence was the game. Obviously things were learned in the Miami loss.

State’s QB Russell Wison certainly played an excellent game throwing for 311 yards and 2 TDS. Wilson never stopped fighting even when all seemed lost.

Ralph commented post game: “Well, just another day at the office. I’m really proud of our players who hung in there. We got off to a slow start. Then we got going offensively and were able to take the lead, and then have an extended lead. Then we tried to keep it as close as we could to keep the TV ratings up. But, I thought you saw an excellent performance tonight from Danny O’Brien andTorrey Smith. I was really impressed with the poise and accuracy which [O’Brien] had tonight. It was one of the better performances I’ve seen by a quarterback. I was very impressed with him.”

State Coach Tom O’Brien :”It was a tough day for us. I think we competed hard and played hard; we just didn’t make a play when we needed to. I give a lot of credit to Maryland because they made the plays when they needed to. We just couldn’t get over the hump today. I’m proud of this team, to start out where we did this year and win eight games and five conference games is something that hasn’t been done at NC State in a long time.”

Mayland’s run game was non-existent having a total of 9 yards. Will Yeatman has drawn the eyes of the NFL in his limited performances–caught 5 passes for 46 yards.  Travis Baltz knocked home a wind aided 52 yard FG as time ran out in the first half.

There certainly was a feeling of victory that pervaded the entire stadium yesterday. Ralph has done a great job of turning the program back around. So much so that today he will receive my vote for ACC Coach of the Year. Now we have to wait for the Bowl process. It really doesn’t matter much to me–I am just glad that the Terrapinsare back in the hunt. The replay will be on tonight at 11PM on Comcast.
