UVA Awaits Terrapins in Crucial Game

Anticipating the impending snowstorm, Gary and his troops left for Charlottesville Wednesday at 1PM. What will we see on Comcast tonight at 7PM.

UVA is a guard oriented more deliberate team then Maryland. The Hoos stand at 11-8 and 2-3 in the ACC. Out of coference they have lost to Stanford, Washington, Seattle (who Maryland drubbed) and Wichita State. UVA has wins over LSU, Oklahoma, and most notably Virginia Tech on the road. They average scoring 64 points a game while giving up 63.

Despite having Assane Sene (7 footer from the Senegal) the Terps should dominate the boards. We will certainly see some zone from the Cavs in an attempt to slow down Jordan. Their leading player Mike Scott a 6-8 PF is out for the year with an ankle injury. 6-4 Sr Mustapha Farrakhan has developed as the go to gut scoring 23 in a win over Georgia Tech. Lately the Cavs have been shooting the 3 much better. Freshmen guards KT Harrell and Joe Harris have been stepping up their games.

Head Coach Tony Bennett hopes to get a quick lead on the usual slow starting Terps and then really try to frustrate Maryland. I always try to pick a stat I believe will turn the game. Tonight I believe Jordan will need at least 20 for the Terps to win. Just a hunch.  The perimeter guys have just not been playing great on the road and John Paul Jones Arena is not an easy road venue.

Keys to a terp victory tonight:

Get off to a good start–at least playing even the first 10 minutes

Jordan will need to score 20 for us to win

Avoid the deep enemy run that has killed us on the road.

I have been very down on Gary for about 4 or 5 years now. I just don’t think he develops players strengths.
What do I mean by that? I mean, if Jimmer Fredette played for MD, he would only avg about 12 points a game.
I DO NOT like the flex offense, unless you have 2, TWO very good shooters.
Md should be a pick n roll type team like the Stockton/Mallone Utah Jazz days. Let the PG drive, and either lay-up, or dish to JW. Keep Hawk on the baseline for 3, and Cliff/Shawn at the FT line to take the 12 footers.
Oh well, I am not the coach.
I also think he just can’t recruit. There is no excuse for this program to be as bad as it has been since the Sweet 16 loss to Xavier, I think it was back in 2003 with Steve and Drew as Senior’s.

Anyway, if the Terps want any shot of making the NCAA’s, they need to win 8 of their last 12, to get to 10 wins in the ACC, then at least 1 win in the ACCT.
The start to that is, they must win the next 2 games.
