Senior Ashley Hendrix, junior Moriah Young and freshman Thea LaFond each won individual events for the Maryland women’s track and field teams at the Saturday Night at the Armory II meet held at the N.Y. Armory.
The Maryland men competed earlier in the day at the Wesley Brown Invitational, hosted by the Naval Academy, with sophomore Josh Haghighi earning a victory.
LaFond led a group of Terrapins that claimed four of the top seven places in the women’s high jump. She won at 5 feet, 8.25 inches, edging teammate Amina Smith who cleared the same mark but had more misses. Lucile Cancre was sixth at 5-5.25 and Amber Melville was seventh at 5-3.75.
Young won the 20-pound weight throw at 59-5.75, picking up her second win of the year. She also won that event at the Nittany Lion Challenge at Penn State. Jessie Echard went nearly two feet past her career-best to finish third at 57-2. The mark moved her into seventh all-time at Maryland.
Hendrix went a season-best 18-11.25 to win the long jump, while LaFond was third in 18-10.50 (moving into 10th all-time). LaFond, a Terrapin freshman, also placed second in the triple jump at 40-3.25, her third 40-plus mark of her first season as a collegian.
Young went a career-best 47-1 to finish fourth in the shot put and tie for sixth on the Terps’ all-time list.
