All the shots that haven’t gone in this year seemed to find the net s early on as Terrell Stoglin led a barrage of 3s early on to catapult Maryland into huge lead it never relinquished.
Berend Weijs earned the starting nod tonight as Turgeon said that his incredibly hard practice pace earned him they slot. But James Padgett was thereby motivated coming off the bench to score 15 and grab 8 rebounds. Alex Len finished with 9 bounds and 4 blocks but was repeatedly stripped of the ball.
To me however the amazing player of this game was Nick Faust. Tonight he was the point guard, the distributor and he played the role fine. Coach Turgeon commented post game:
“I think he’s a lot better today than he was when we started way back when Pe’Shon [Howard] got hurt the first time. I just thought he was great defensively. I thought he got us into our stuff pretty well. I thought he got a little dribble happy in the second half. But the thing is Nick is going to do what I ask him to do and that’s nice. We’re figuring it out. Sometimes Terrell [Stoglin] has it and sometimes Nick has it, and it’s going to take us a little bit more time. I thought Nick was great except for the turnovers and the charges–he shouldn’t have been doing that–and then he just dribbled out of bounds one time. He tries to do too much. I think we’ll watch film of him from tonight and when we’re on the bus tomorrow going to Virginia and I think he’ll learn when to give it up a little bit sooner.”
Stogs defended well and the ACC scoring leader finished with a game high 24 points. Captain Sean Mosley was his usual self–playing excellent defense according to the Cpach, scoring 13 with 4 rebounds and 3 assists.
The Terps move to 5-6 in the ACC and 15-10 overall.
The highlight of the night however was watching Ernie Graham being honored by having his jersey lifted o the rafters. I just felt great for Ernie and was proud of the great showing from Baltimore including the Mayor, Senator Frank Kelly, and representatives from the Police Department. Senator Kelly was instrumental in getting tonight’s honor in order and Ernie acknowledged his effort in the press conference afterwards.
