Observations of a great opening win for the Terps:
Curtis Holmes won the face face off battle 19-1. A team will rarely lose with this margin. Today was no different. Curtis also had a goal and scooped 9 ground balls.
Quint Kessenich did not pick Maryland for his top 10 this year and somewhat indicated that Hartford was on the rise and the Terps were on the fall. That was not what I saw.
It was hard to judge Maryland going into this game. After all they started 2 sophomores and 1 freshman (Goran Murray) on defense. The attack was also 100% replaced with only a hobbled Owen Blye returning. Captain Joe Cummings moved back to attack from his middie position of the past few years. Joe is a natural leader and had a goal and an assist and will mold the many pieces of the attack together.
The X factor today was the scintillating play of transfer Mike Chanenchuck. He had a goal and an assist but he was firing bullets (10 shots) on Hartford all day. Is t possible his shot is faster then Catalino’s. 3 more years of Chanenchuck bodes well for the Terps.
Another transfer, Billy Gribbin seemed to be in the right place all day netting 2 goals. Picking up from last year middies Snider and John Haus contributed a combined 7 points and dominated play .
The Terps were 19-19 in clears. 53-21 in groundballs and 40-23 in shots. But again it was the All American play of Curtis Holmes that made this happen. Next up on the road at Georgetown Friday night at 7PM.
