Tianna Hawkins and Laurin Mincy Lead Maryland to 63-61 Win Over #5 Duke at Comcast

Tianna Hawkins scored 19 points, including the tiebreaking basket with 14 seconds left, and Maryland (No. 7 ESPN/USA Today, No. 8 AP) defeated fifth-ranked Duke 63-61 Sunday to end the Blue Devils’ bid to go unbeaten in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Laurin Mincy had 17 points for the Terrapins (23-4, 10-4). Alyssa Thomas grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked a last-second shot by Haley Peters to secure the victory. The game drew a crowd of 15,150, eighth-largest in school history. It was also the eighth-largest crowd to watch an ACC regular-season game.

A few comments:
With 21 seconds left and the score tied, Alyssa Thomas drove down the court with breakneck speed missed a layup but Tianna was there for the winning putback. I asked Brenda if that was the designed play as most teams would hold for one shot. Brenda said holding for the last shot was the strategy but Alyssa took it on her own. I thought it was great move because Maryland had really been struggling with Duke’s trapping half court defense.
What a tremendous, enthusiastic crowd!!!  The arena was shaking in the final moments.
I arrived 20 minutes late and the score 17-5 Duke with 10 minutes left in the half. Glad iI missed whatever led us to score 5 points in 10 minutes.
Brenda was ecstatic postgame. Here are some of her comments: “I told the team in the locker room this one was special for a lot of different reasons. I think first and foremost was to have a game of this magnitude and the adversity that we faced obviously in the first half and just to be able to see the heart and the character that we played with throughout a very difficult game. And credit Duke, they were tremendous and really gave us fits in terms of what we were looking at.
