The Journal News in Martinsburg, WV is reporting the following:
CHARLES TOWN -Four jockeys were involved in a major collision during Wednesday night’s horse racing card at Charles Town Races and Slots.
During the evening’s sixth race, which was an $18,000 event, a pileup occurred as the field came through the far turn and headed toward the final stretch.
“One horse went down and started a chain reaction,” said Erich Zimny, racing administrator at Charles Town Races and Slots.
Three jockeys were known to be injured in the incident, but the extent to which the fourth rider, J.D. Acosta, was a bit unclear. Acosta reportedly received a cut after being kicked by another horse. He was back racing on Thursday in the afternoon’s first race, riding Buck the Trend.
James Vail, riding Purrfect Smoke, who apparently fell and started the reaction, broke his arm, while Alcibiades Cortez, riding Passion Glory, suffered a broken nose. The other jockey, Mathew McGowan, received a number of bumps and bruises from the incident. Those three were taken to the hospital.
All four jockeys were scheduled to race in multiple events Thursday afternoon
Apparently Journal News didn’t bother to watch the video. The crash happened during the 8th race, not the 6th. Also, the race was clearly for $28,000 and not $18,0000.
