A big reason for Maryland’s run to the National Championship game a year ago was the play of their young goaltender. 2012 will be no different, but this time around Amato is the veteran of the Terp defense. When Amato struggles so does Maryland; in three of the Terrapin’s five losses this season he recorded single digit saves. When he is on he provides a spark that is tough to beat. Lehigh will be hosting for the first time so the environment will be rocking in Bethlehem. Amato will need to make early stops to keep Lehigh at bay and keep the crowd out of the game.
The leadership has been strong all year for the Mountain Hawks. After an early season loss to Villanova a players-only meeting resulted in increased focus and more accountability. All of that translated into a magical season for Lehigh, a season with a lot of firsts- Patriot League title and NCAA berth. The next first is Sunday night when Lehigh hosts an NCAA tournament game, and captains Roman and Cameron Lao-Gosney and Blaise Fullen will need to help their team with guidance off of the field and smart, steady play on.
