In a battle of two perennial college soccer powers, the No. 6 Maryland men’s soccer team drew with No. 11 UCLA 2-2 on an energy-fueled Friday night at Ludwig Field.
The first 15 minutes were fast paced, with UCLA’s Reed Wiliams opening the scoring. Williams slotted the ball past Maryland keeper Keith Cardona after a flick-on header from Ryan Hollingshead in the ninth minute.
Maryland responded 19 seconds later when Dan Metzger tapped the ball into the back of the net after a good run and cross from Patrick Mulllins.
UCLA retook control in the 14th minute when Victor Munoz and Fernando Monge combined to set up Williams for his second tally of the game. Munoz fed Monge, who was then able to tee up Williams for the easy finish.
The Terrapins poured on the pressure in the second half, outshooting the Bruins, 12-2. Maryland was rewarded for its effort in the 68th minute, when Schillo Tshuma was brought down in the box, leading to a John Stertzer penalty kick and tying the score at 2-2. from umterps.com
