One point was crystal clear yesterday, that Maryland is the Home of College Soccer. Almost 10,000 were in attendance at the Germantown Soccer Complex to witness the Terps dominate the Tar Heels and capture the ACC Title.
Defender Dakota Edwards scored at the 10 minute mark to give the Terps a lead they would not relinquish. It was the 1st goal scored this year against the Tar Heels in the 1st half. freshman Scillo Tshuma added a deflected goal at the 61 minute mark to put the game out of reach—sort of. Carolina’s scorer, Rob Lovejoy cut the margin to 2-1 with under 5 minutes left but the Terps were able to maintain control for most of the final minutes.
Post Game John Stertzer was emphatic about the importance of the role of the “Crew” in the victory. 90% of the fans in attendance were Terp supporters but none more wildly behind the team as the Crew. Memo-33 Check out the memo for post game comments from Sssho, Stertzer and MVP Mullins.
With 5 minutes to go I was handed the All Star and MVP Ballot and on this Maryland team it was difficult to single out one person as MVP. You could make the case for so many.
“I’ll cherish this one forever and I think our alumni and fans will as well,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “Today we played a great game, our best of the year. I thought today we were very sharp in all phases of the game and deserved the victory against one of the great teams in soccer and certainly the best defensive team we’ve seen in the nation.”
So now with 2 0f its 3 goals accomplished, Maryland will await the 530 pairings show on Monday.
