The University of Maryland baseball team added strength to an already talented roster with the signing of seven student-athletes to National Letters-of-Intent, head coach John Szefc announced Friday. The seven-person class will arrive in College Park in August 2013, and compete for the Terps in the 2014 season.
The signing class consists of two players who received preseason All-American honors from Perfect Game USA prior to their junior seasons, as well as two players ranked among the top 500 players in the country.
“The class fills a lot if not all of the needs we have,” said Szefc. “It is a pitching heavy class, which is pretty typical nowadays. It has some balance to it as far guys that would project to being starters and some that would project as being finishers. All four of the position players are immediate impact type of players. The class covers a lot of the needs that we have and combined with the outstanding young players we have in our program now, it should be a really good compliment.”
The two signees ranked among the nation’s top 500 according to Perfect Game are: No. 258 Chase Brewis (RHP | Glen Burnie, Md.) and No. 500 Nick Cieri (C/3B | Hainesport, N.J.).
Several of the players rank among the top 50 players in their respective states: Brewis is No. 4 in Maryland, Keith is No. 14 in Maryland, Cieri is No. 16 in New Jersey, Mike Rescigno (3B | Monmouth Beach, N.J.) is No. 28 in New Jersey, Andrew Green (RHP | Blairstown, N.J.) is No. 35 in New Jersey, and Tayler Stiles (LHP | Bowie, Md.) is No. 47 in Maryland.
