It’s Only 1 Game and it’s Jan 9—That’s my Best Spin—Terps Fall to FSU 65-62

Losing this is not what really bothers me, it’s the way we played. For what seemed like half of the 2nd half nothing we did made any sense. 10 turnovers in the 1st half kept us from running away with the game. FSU just plain and simple beat us up and won the game with their #1 player only getting 22 minutes of action due to foul trouble. Here’s a list of bad stat guys tonight:

Dez              2-9 from the field with 5 turnovers

PeShon      0 points 1 assist and 3 (seemed like 6 or 7 to me) turnovers

Seth            13 points  1 assist  5 turnovers

Logan         1-5 from the 3 point line

Only a hobbled Nick Faust had a decent game among the guards. —5-10 with 14 its –2 assists 4 rebounds and 0 turnovers. Might we see a little more point guard play from Nick? I just don’t know what was wrong with PeShon tonight but he was definitely out of sync. I wouldn’t be shocked to see Turge shake the lineup again though I am not sure if this helps. Its way too early to panic.

The most important thing to do in ACC play is protect your house. Tonight that didn’t happen. After the IUPUI game I asked Turge what was he was most concerned about heading into the ACC schedule. His response was that we hadn’t played a real physical team yet and he was worried about how we would do in close games. Well his worries came home to roost tonight.

This was a game that Padgett loved and he responded well when entering the lineup.

The score stayed at 43-42 for at least 4 minutes with FSU missing 6 foul shots and the Terps tossing up a series of bricks.

For the last 2 days all I heard was that Leonard Hamilton (former Wiz coach and a really good guy) had never won once in College Park. It bothered me and that was that. I guess over the next few days I will state that Peyton is 9-0 vs the Ravens his last 9 starts. Maybe it works.

FYI, Turge has a recruiting trip scheduled to Minnesota tomorrow. He is relentless!!!

POST GAME TURGEON COMMENTS

Opening Statement:
“I give Florida State a lot of credit. They weren’t making a lot of jump shots and they just kept trying and trying and they defended. At the end tonight they just had the best player on the floor, Okaro White. We had no answer for him. When the game was on the line and we had to show toughness, we didn’t have it. I think it was 51-all and they got offensive rebound after offensive rebound, mostly him [White]. That was the difference. They missed two long threes and they chased them down. They stepped up and made free throws, they weren’t making them but they stepped up and made them at the end. I am disappointed. We didn’t play well but give them a lot of credit why we didn’t play well. We were never in sync. We panicked offensively. We panicked as players and as a coaching staff a little bit. We couldn’t figure it out. We kept subbing guys in and different things. We will watch the film and try to learn from it.”

On the missed opportunities:
“I think when we were up 10 or 11 in the first half it should have been 15 or 16. We were missing wide open shots and throwing the ball out of bounds. We had six turnovers at the first timeout. They weren’t making shots. I felt like there were a lot of opportunities for us in the first half. I knew at the first possession of the second half that it was going to be a grinder. I ran a play and we didn’t get anything, just threw it out of bounds. We had a lot of guys not make good decisions tonight. Give them credit, this is the first time we have seen that kind of defense for 40 minutes. We didn’t handle it very well.”

On the last play:
“He [Seth Allen] is a freshmen and I haven’t coached him that much. We haven’t had a game go down to the wire yet, except for the Kentucky game. We didn’t execute that either. Pe’Shon [Howard] shot a shot when Jake [Layman] was standing wide open next to him. Seth had probably made up his mind that he was going to shoot it. I wish Alex [Len] would have set that screen more by half court rather than the key where he set it. That would have opened up the floor a little bit more. I was pretty loud in there it was hard to communicate. We were saying that we could take a two…They zoned up on it pretty good and he couldn’t get by it so he had to take the shot. They are long and athletic.”

first half faust hits 2 quick 3’s and then he’s off to the bench. 8 seconds to go in the game. md ball and faust who just made a big 3 is pulled from the floor. here’s the one guy shooting well and not turning it over and he’s not on the floor for the last offensive play. turgeon….He [Seth Allen] is a freshmen and I haven’t coached him that much. it’s january. practice started in oct. mark, if you’re going to use the excuse that you haven’t coached him much and he’s a freshman why is he handling the ball on the last play. pe’shon and allen were both terrible handling the ball last night. neither could dribble or pass.
one reason md uses 10 players is because no one plays that well game in and game out. earlier this yr bruce mentioned dez wells is probably one and done. if that’s the case i have 2 words for dez..rosetta stone..because if he’s playing pro ball next yeat it’s in a foreign country so he better learn a second language. bad loss last night.

in regards to the line-up. how about faust at the point. he’s 6’6″ can pass, good court sense, great driving to the hole, can shoot from the outside and with his size and defensive ability he would give the other team’s point guard a lot of prolems and if you disrupt the point guard you disrupt the team. dez wells at small forward. much better driver than out side shootr. jake layman at shooting guard. 6’8″ shooting guard would have far more better looks from the outside at guard. cleare at center. true back to th basket big man. len at forweard. i still think he’d be better off facing the basket on offense. chuck mitchell first big man off the bench. pe’shon overall has handled the ball pretty well this year but offers very little in scoring. seth allen looks lost far too many times handling the ball and at this time would better serve the team as an off guard. kinda of a instant offense off the bench guy.

    I agree ith Fred’s suggestions.
Only caveat is that Faust is too often out of control, but his drives and penetration are the missing ingredient. Pshon just dribbles oo much without creating any mismatches or breaking down defenses. He is a non threat.
Was wondering why Jake was not in the lineup as well. He is a difficult match up.
I am starting to wonder about Turgeon’s in game decisions. Just running players in there without any reason, especially after having these guys to coach for now over 3 months. Why not use the length and talent available to force the competition to make the adjustments rather than vice versa.
Agree about Dez not being NBA ready, as well as Len.
If one can not be dominant at this point, even after the cupcake schedule, how can either be projected against big time NBA talent?

Last night was the first time I say Turgeon out coached. What ever adjustment Hamilton made at half-time, MD never figured out. Peshon Howard is terrible. He can’t shoot, makes bad passes, and is a step slow on D. Other then that he is a great player.

I think Freddy from Boca is on the mark about moving Faust to PG. Even if he lacks the great ball control, he is energetic. He has to be more constant with his outside shot. He either pulls up for a 3 or drives to the hoop. A mid range game would make a major differnece.

The other waste of minutes is Padjent. After last nights game, he should not have to eat for a week. He continues to get shots back in his face after a strong rebound. He needs to move the ball back outside.

I think a line up of Faust, Len, Mitchell, Dez, and Layman, with Seth, Shaq, and the rest to fill in.
