For the 4th time this year FSU wins a game at the buzzer as Michael Snaer dropped in a wide open jumper to seal the victory and drop the Terps to 3-5 in the conference. As Ian Miller sort of lost control of the ball as the clock ticked down, Dez left Snaer trying to steal the ball and the rest is history. In fairness to Dez, he absolutely carried the team down the wire with 19 points.
The Terps are 3-5 in conference and most experts will say they need 10 or 11 wins to garner a bid to the dance because of the weak non conference schedule. That creates a finish of 7-3 or 8-2—pretty tough.
Let’s analyze the brutal loss. The Terps outshot the Seminoles 49% to 45. They outrebounded FSU 36-20. The Terps had 6 threes –FSU 5. So where does the loss occur—once again turnovers 16 –that’s right 16 for Maryland 6 for the Seminoles. This turnover issue has plagued Maryland all year. Perhaps the loss of PeShon to the flu hurt down the wire. Who knows?
Snapshot on the 9 players:
Jake Layman–a hotly talked about player on the website yesterday, Jake could only muster 4 shots of which 3 found home. 2 threes early gave the Terps a great jumpstart. Add 4 rebounds and 2 assists and it was a good effort by Jake.
Seth got the start tonight and just had a weak game. 1-6 from the field and according to Turgeon, he pouted on the bench all night.
Shaq–a quiet 16 minutes–0 FGs but 5 bounds
Mitchell—another solid game 4-5 10 points and he just seems to get the loose balls.
Logan–his best ACC game yet–2 Threes and 11 points.
Padge–31 minutes because of Len’s disappearance act. Aggressive 6 points and 3 bounds
Alex–just was not his night—missed key dunk with 12 seconds left–flailing his elbows all night –had 4 fouls could have been many more—3 turnovers–hope the NBA scouts missed this one for his sake—deserves a mulligan—
Nick–until the final minutes had a good game. 3 missed foul shots were brutal–fouled Okaro White for no reason late in the game
Dez—8-12 –many key late shots–definitely has become go to guy–but still 6 turnovers
This was one we had to have and we just fell short–Painful

Painful?
How about devastating?
Would like to see the reactions to Efsall throwing anyone under the bus, the way Turgeon did Len after this game.
Don’t worry about NBA scouts, they have already seen Len’s disappearing act.
And you think P’ shon would have helped, seriously?
One of the most disappointing seasons performance wise for a coach and publicsized players in memory.
Pathetic!

dez wells made the worst play possible. leaving his man, fl st’s best player, a guy known for shooting game winning shots to help out on a guard who was doubled teamed, off balance and who was moving away from the basket. the one guy you had to play tight was left completely open. and no, because dez scored 19 points you cannot give him any slack. dez had at least 6 turnovers. padgett..aggressive 6 points and 3 boards. please he played 31 minutes..that’s pathetic production for that many minutes. pe’shon hasn’t made a play, particularly under pressure all year. welcome to the spin zone.

Missed free throws, turnovers, poor defensive choices… had we made one less mistake in any one of those areas it wouldn’t have come down to a last second shot but that’s what happens when you have a young team.
I do think PeShon could have made a difference simply by getting Len more involved early but combine that with his tendency to turn the ball over and no scoring ability, it may have been a wash. Allen certainly struggled in his place. For this team to turn things around this season PeShon has to contribute.
MD was picked to finish 7th in the ACC and is currently tied for 8th with a the weaker part of the ACC schedule still to come. Is this a tournament team? No, but no one should have expected them to be.
Mricklen
Actually Md was picked to finish 6th in the preseason ACC coaches poll.
Add to that the persistent perspectives of the coach that the Terps will be even better in a month, after MD’s blazing start of 12/1, and perhaps expectations were not that unreasonable ?
But to think that the success of this team could be better with Peshon available is truly unreasonable.
He was there when we blew the lead at home against FSU.
He is slow, can not penetrate, is consistently beaten on D, and has no shot whatsoever. Hopefully that is not a scenario that we are missing.
I do think that a big part of the losing in the Acc, other than the obvious, is the imbalance received from the referees, which is not surprising given the imminent departure to the Big 10.
For a team that’s main strength is supposedly in the paint, Md is just not getting to the foul line. This is compounded by their woeful foul shooting when they are fortunate enough to get the whistles.

12-1 start against a cupcake schedule and many of the games were closer than they should have been. The VT game definitely got my hopes up but MD played a perfect game and every 3 point shot was going in, that won’t happen very often.
PeShon has struggled this year but he averages 4.5 assists per game and has by far the best assist to turnover ratio on the team. Who cares if he can’t shoot he’s a point guard and his job is to get others involved. When he’s in the game Len is a better player. When the defense has to focus more on Len it opens things up for the outside shooters which in turn opens things up for slashers like Wells and Faust. It’s a team game and role players can be very important even when they don’t fill up the stat sheet.

Brian, again you fail to mention Peshon’s defense and prefer to avoid his non existent offensive skills.
I still say that Jake s the best feeder into the post, mainly over Peshon, because they have to guard Jake, but not P.
Also dribbling around the perimeter with no penetration threat is a waste of time and does not facilitate the offense. Leads to a turnover machine.
Also this team is so limited offensively, that they can not afford a zero from any position.
brian2580
Defense is not an issue for this team or PeShon, who is 4th on the team in steals, I’m not sure where you’re seeing that.
There was no one feeding the post when PeShon was out on Wednesday so I have no idea why you feel Layman is any better suited for that job.
Passing is an offensive skill and more important than shooting for point guards. I’d rather have 15 points from Len and 0 from PeShon than 2 from Seth Allen and 4 from Len.
