Coach K Bitter in defeat —As Always

Coach K displayed his bitterness as someone asked about Maryland’s move to the Big 10:

“We don’t look at any rivalries; we look at each opponent the same. I’ve said that every time I’ve come here. I have a great deal of respect for Maryland. If it was such a rivalry they’d still be in the ACC. Obviously they don’t think it’s that important, or they wouldn’t be in the Big Ten. I respect their basketball program and the job their coaches have done and their players have done over the years. We’ve had some great games with them, but we have great games against a lot of people. A lot of people want to beat us, and they’re one of them.”

i’m sure coach k was against the acc expansion of miami, fl st and va tech an is against louisville, pitt and syracuse coming into the league. i think he would prefer the old acc where you played eveyone twice a year. his perspective of md moving to the big ten is understandably different than most terps fans. if duke wasn’t a top 10 team year in and year out there wouldn’t be a so called rivalry. when md went to back to back final fours it put us on the same level as duke. since those days md has gome downhill while duke remains a top echelon team so when duke comes into road venue it’s a big game for the home team. if duke was a 500 team md duke would be just another game. where if nc and duke were both 500 the game between them would still be very very big. the fact is as a md fan i’m tired of other teams making it a big game. md needs to put themselves in a position where they are the team other schools want to beat and their fans rush the floor because they beat md. i’d rather be the team being upset than upsetting someone.

I wish Terp basketball was at the level of the early 2000’s. I love the big game atmosphere when Duke and (sometimes) UNC come to Comcast. The Duke game has been the pinnacle of the season.

We need to get beyond have a one game focus for selling tickets and get back to having a great team that everyone wants to see.
