#1 Terps Jump on Top of Stony Brook Behind the Dominate X Position Play of Charlie Raffa—Coast to 13-7 Win

It was obvious the Terrapins were antsy after having the UMBC game canceled on Wednesday. As has been the case this year they dominated early and gained a 4-0 lead and never looked back. Charlie Raffa won 150f 18 faceoffs and that was that.

Nine different Terps scored as kevin Cooper, Joe LoCasio, Mike Chanenchuk, and Owen Blye each scored twice. Leading 12-4 after 3 periods, coach Tillman cleared the bench which provided an interesting 4th quarter. Backup goalie Kyle Bernlohr made 2 super saves down the stretch. Unfortunately for him, he is playing behind one of the hottest goalies in the country, Niko Amato.

Curiously, there were 3 timeouts in the final 2 minutes of a game that was just close. The Terps are 5-0 and headed to Villanova Saturday night.

Coach Tillman commented post game:

On how the game unfolded and Maryland’s fast start:
“Obviously Charlie [Raffa] did such a good job at the X and the wing guys did a really good job, so when you get that many possessions you give yourself an opportunity to get in a flow offensively. You kind of get a sense of what they’re going to do with a fast tempo, and when Charlie’s doing things like that it definitely makes things easier. We didn’t expect to get off to that fast of a start; we knew Stony Brook played really good team defense.”

On if he was pleased with the team’s energy level after not playing for eight days:
“The seniors really had them dialed in. It’s funny being off that long, I felt like we were a little flat in practice yesterday, but talking to the guys I think they wanted the game to get here. Sometimes you forget that they’re 18 to 22 year-olds, and they practice so hard they want to go out and play against somebody different. That’s what they really enjoy doing, they love playing at Byrd [Stadium], so at times they almost start looking ahead. We had to just caution them to take care of what we can take care of, and control what we can control.
