Maryland scored five runs in the final two innings, but its comeback fell short as Wake Forest (13-12, 2-6 ACC) held on for a wild 8-7 victory Saturday afternoon at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.
An eight-run eighth inning by the Demon Deacons was the Terps undoing and spoiled a strong effort from Terrapin starter Brady Kirkpatrick. The junior pitched seven-shutout innings with six strikeouts.
The first six innings of Saturday’s contest had all of the makings of a pitcher’s duel. Kirkpatrick held the Deacons to one hit through three innings. Wake Forest starter Justin Van Grouw was as equally impressive holding the Terps’ offense to the same stat line.
My take:–I watched Brady for about 3 innings. Awesome performance. Along with the Terps’ Fridaty night pitcher, Jimmy Reed, Maryland might have its best 1-2 pitcher rotation that it has had in years.
