Ouch–Undefeated Season is History as Terps Drop 10-8 Battle to Carolina

The No. 1 University of Maryland men’s lacrosse team scored six of the final eight goals, but couldn’t complete the comeback in a 10-8 loss to No. 14 North Carolina in front of 3,053 at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The result drops the Terps to 6-1 on the season and evens their ACC mark at 1-1, while the Tar Heels improve to 5-3 overall and are also 1-1 in conference play.

Senior attackmen Owen Blye and Kevin Cooper each had three points on two goals and an assist to lead the Terrapins, but Carolina got 12 points combined from its starting attack of senior Marcus Holman and sophomores Jimmy Bitter and Joey Sankey.

My take—–It’s interesting to listen to the Terrapin leaders, Niko and Jake Bernhardt. After the past 2 seasons this team is clearly focused on its growth leading up to Memorial Day weekend. I really don’t believe that there was inner pressure because of the #1 ranking and 6-0 start. It’s all about what happens in Philadelphia and the games leading up to it. Memo-51 —Post game with Niko and Jake Bernhardt

In the first quarter Maryland won 11 of 14 ground ball battles yet trailed 5-2. It seemed like the Terps were firing high into the stick of the Carolina goalie, who by the way had an excellent game.

Again this week Charlie Raffa was 50-50 on face-offs against Keenan.

In summary, yes it was disappointing but no–not earth shattering . This ais a very talented Carolina attack and I am sure somewhere down the road we will get another crack at them.

3,000 in a 54,000 seat stadium. they need to figure out a way to build a soccer/lacrosse stadium that seats about 6,000 and can be expanded with temporary bleachers for big games to about 8,000.
