The Maryland women’s basketball team advanced to its fifth Sweet Sixteen under head coach Brenda Frese Monday with a 74-49 win over fifth-seeded Michigan State at Comcast Center.
Alyssa Thomas scored 28 points, Katie Rutan had 18 and Tianna Hawkins had 12 points and 11 boards for her 17th double-double this year. Alicia DeVaughn added 10 rebounds.
The fourth-seeded Terrapins (26-7) will face top seed Connecticut (31-4) in the Bridgeport Regional semifinals Saturday at noon at the Webster Bank Arena.
Thomas, a two-time Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year, had 18 at halftime to provide the Terrapins with an 11-point cushion. Her layup with 15 minutes left gave her 25 points and put Maryland up 46-30. from umterps.com
My take: Alyssa Thomas is the best basketball player in the country. She tallied 28 points tonight. UConn will be ready for her as it was the 1st time they faced her in the beginning of the season. The Terps have a tough task but if anyone can lead us through this game it is Alyssa Thomas.
